Algorithms can change in an instant, undoing years of your hard work by shifting the landscape of social media visibility. Staying adaptable is key.
I still remember the day I became one of the first financial advisors on LinkedIn. It was a bold move, especially back in the early 2000s. Merrill Lynch's compliance department wasn't thrilled about it, and I was even required to take down my profile. The reasoning? Social media wouldn't amount to much, and it was seen as a fad. Fast-forward to today, and LinkedIn boasts over 1.1 billion profiles, solidifying its position as the top social media platform for wealth managers and high net worth clients.
In my over 20-year wealth management consulting business, I've helped million-dollar wealth management teams scale by focusing on long-term relationships with clients who are committed to growing their wealth over time. It’s best to avoid what we call in the industry "renting clients"—those who are impulsive with their wealth, like lottery winners or celebrities who spend lavishly on fleeting indulgences. Instead, you should seek clients who value stability and strategic financial planning. These clients won't just leap off the proverbial cliff when the markets get volatile. This approach ensures that your clients stay with you for years, allowing you to help them achieve their financial goals.
However, there's a similar concept that applies to social media: you're just renting your time. At any point, after investing massive amounts of time developing your network, the algorithms can change, and your posts may no longer reach your intended audience. Sometimes, they might only be seen by your competitors. Yikes! This is a stark reminder of the risks involved in building a presence on platforms like LinkedIn.
In my just-launched The MarFi Edge newsletter website for financial advisors, I'm focusing on changes that are affecting financial advisor growth, including AI, DeFi, and trends in female investor markets. As part of my 2025 LinkedIn series, I’ve put together a concise eBook about algorithm changes to respect your time while providing actionable strategies. These changes have reshaped the social media landscape, and it's essential for financial advisors to stay ahead of the curve.
· Decreased Visibility: Your posts are not reaching as many people as they used to.
· Lower Engagement: Likes and comments are dwindling, making it harder to build a community.
· Competition for Attention: With so much noise, it's challenging to stand out and showcase your expertise.
As a financial advisor, your time is already stretched thin. You can’t afford to spend hours trying to keep up with the latest LinkedIn trends or experimenting with strategies that may not work. You need actionable advice that cuts through the noise and helps you achieve your goals productively.
